Tony Slattery dies aged 65 after heart attack

Tony Slattery, a comedian, died at the age of 65, his partner confirmed.

Slattery performed on the Channel 4 comedic improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The comedy series Just a Minute and Have I Got News for You are also popular.

According to his companion Mark Michael Hutchinson’s statement, “We are deeply saddened to announce that actor and comedian Tony Slattery, 65, died early this morning, the morning of Tuesday, following a heart attack on Sunday evening.”

Sandi Toksvig paid tribute to Slattery, calling him the most gorgeous man she had ever met. He was amazing when we first met when I was 19 years old. He has a beautiful grin, an amazing laugh, and a mile-long streak of generosity.  He was my favorite. It was all of us. He stood out as the brightest and greatest in a room packed with ability.” Slattery, who was born into a working-class family, received a scholarship at Cambridge University in 1959 to study medieval and modern languages.

His classmates at Cambridge included Dame Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, and Sir Stephen Fry, who invited him to join the Cambridge Footlights. As a result, Slattery became the club’s president, succeeding Eric Idle, Clive Anderson, and Peter Cook. He once claimed that the delight of being up on stage and hearing laughs overwhelmed him.

Slattery’s cinematic credits included The Crying Game, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, and Peter’s Friends.

X immediately received tributes to the comic, including one from his Whose Line Is It Anyway? co-star and pianist Richard Vranch.

“Tony Slattery was one of the funniest people I have ever met,” another fan said. Genius has a dark side. Tony had troubles, but they were resolved, and his future appeared bright. Rest in peace, sir. I appreciate the chuckles.

“God bless and keep beloved Tony Slattery, beautiful man,” said a second. So depressing. Angel, rest in peace. Xxxxx.

Comedian Tony Slattery has died at the age of 65, his partner confirmed.

The actor, who appeared on several popular TV sitcoms including Whose Line Is It Anyway, died of a heart attack.

Actor and comedian Tony Slattery, 65, passed suddenly today, Tuesday morning, after suffering a heart attack on Sunday night, according to a statement given by his companion Mark Michael Hutchinson.

Born on November 9, 1959, in London, Slattery quickly pursued a career in the arts.

At the University of Cambridge, the comedian was the friend of Hugh Laurie, Sir Stephen Fry, and Dame Emma Thompson. He also served as the president of a local improv group.

However, his resume also included more serious on-screen performances, demonstrating that his skills extended beyond just making people laugh.

Slattery has roles in Peter’s Friends, The Crying Game, and How to Get Ahead in Advertising.

Richard Vranch, the pianist and co-star of Whose Line Is It Anyway? was among the many people who paid their respects to the comedian on X.

“One fan wrote that Tony Slattery had a great sense of humor.” There is a darker side to genius. Tony had his problems, but they were over, and his future appeared bright. Rest in peace, sir. I appreciate the chuckles.

The words “God love and keep beloved Tony Slattery, beautiful man,” were repeated a second time. So depressing. Angel, rest in peace. Xxxxx.

“Dear Tony Slattery, I am sorry to hear that you passed away at age 65.” said a commenter elsewhere.

I made an appearance on the television version of Trivial Pursuits in the early 1990s, which was hosted by a pretty funny guy. Even though his later years were less happy, he was a beautiful presenter, and I will always remember that.

During an interview with the Guardian in 2019, Slattery said, “I had a very happy time until I went slightly barmy.” We are saddened to learn of Slattery’s passing. A fourth person said, “RIP Tony, a true comedian of my generation.” The comedian turned to alcoholism and cocaine use after leaving Whose Line Is It Anyway in the 1990s, and after a difficult time in his life, which included a six-month period during which he refused to leave his house or interact with others, he was given a bipolar disorder diagnosis.

To the newspaper, he acknowledged that he would alternate between “a near-comatose state and terrible isolationism, followed by terrible agitation, constant pacing, and sitting inside with thoughts whirling round and round.”

He told the newspaper that one “contributing factor” to his mental state was the trauma he experienced when he was “about eight” years old.

According to the comic, he was sexually abused as a child by a priest.

I once heard from a doctor who told the Guardian, “Remember that some things are so deeply buried that there is nothing to gain by an archeological dig.” Keep it hidden.

In an episode of the BBC’s Horizon documentary series, he went into additional detail about the incident.
